I have always loved the idea of expressing creativity through hair, nails, makeup, and fashion, so I want to express my thoughts about a few statements regarding these interests, which I have heard numerous times. In my eyes, people who have a passion for these topics see them as forms of art and self expression. Others say it is "superficial" or "trying too hard."

“Women who wear makeup, fake nails, and fake eyelashes are shallow and insecure.”

Comments like this have always rubbed me the wrong way, possibly from people who feel like they are above others if they don't do these things, or some who feel that it is their place to judge those who do.

It is important to love yourself either way, everyone has the right to present themselves however they wish. If some women chose to be completely natural, that is their personal choice. But, if some do not, it does not mean they are fake or uncomfortable in their own skin. It is no one's business but your own, and both are beautiful.

I feel, that doing different makeup, nail, and hair looks are fun forms of art, as well as ways to express yourself and your creative side. I also feel more confident when I am well put together and feel presentable. These ideas are all opinion based. Sitting down to do a new set of nails or a full face of makeup is relaxing to me, and it is a way to spend time truly getting to know yourself. Makeup is meant to enhance natural beauty and features, not convey or mask flaws. Experimenting with different looks is a powerful way to express something unique about your inner self and give a glimpse into your personality. I think that treating makeup as an art or wearing outfits that display your unique fashion sense increases your authenticity, it does not take away from it.

If you are judging and making negative comments about the way someone else choses to present themselves, it says more about you, rather than them. Next time you think that someone looks overdone by wearing a "too much makeup" or an outfit that would be considered "over dressed," try to think about the energy they put into it, as well as the fact that they are using their body as a canvas for authentic, confident, self expression. You might begin to appreciate the passion for creating yourself.
